Waiting in line to enter the park at dusk. A man is selling fresh peaches on the side of the road. I take a shot of Whisky. I roll down my window to listen to my fellow Bonnaroovians clapping and I join them.
My group and I set up camp in the dark, with a flashlight in one hand and a sleeping bag in the other. Everyone is chuckling and interested in their neighbors. I become curious about people, but I also feel like I've known them since birth.
I wake up sweating, as the Tennessee sun slowly turns our tent into an oven. I know I only have a few minutes to put on my clothes and get out of there. I say hello to the spider next to my bag. I step outside to an instant, relieving breeze. I jump onto the roof of my car and see this...
We pass around hugs and high fives. We talk about which performances we are most hyped for, we share a jumbo box of Goldfish, we re-unite with friends we met last year, we paint our faces, and we form a sense of community. I am here to be comfortable, to be my truest self, to be free. I drink lemonade out of a Solo cup and take a relaxed breath. I am ready to enter Centeroo.
Passing through the Arch is one of life's greatest accomplishments. I lie under a giant oak tree and take a nap, while a band I'm hearing for the first time plays in the distance. I wake up with grass stuck to my legs and I embrace the indents remaining on my skin.
I wonder why people stay in the port-o-poties long enough to draw graffiti on the walls, but I have to admit, the bathroom suitation adds to the experience. We roll around under a giant parachute, as if we are innocent children.
We run from This Tent, to That Tent, to the Other Tent...off to Which Stage, and then to What Stage, to make sure we catch a glimpse of every artist we want to see. I dance by myself. The guy in the yellow underwear is doing it too.
Open minds, creativity, and positive energy radiate everywhere.
This is just the beginning. For the next four days, an outside world does not exist.
